Genesis, all 50 chapters summarized!
THE BOOK OF GENESIS SUMMARY. Through reading and studying through the first book of the Bible, I felt led to summarize all 50 chapters, and I have found this to be helping in retaining information and understanding it better.
Genesis is the first book of the Bible. The word Genesis means “the origin or coming into being of something.” Recorded here are such important beginnings as the Creation, the fall of man, and the early years of the nation of Israel. It was written to explain how everything began. It explains how God created the universe, how people were created and placed in a perfect environment, how sin began, and how God decided to deal with evil. The beginnings of languages, arts, vocations, and nations are also recorded in this book. The focus shifts to the beginnings of the Hebrew people, starting with Abraham, then Isaac and Jacob, and ending with the story of Joseph.
Genesis 12 – The call of Abram – he takes his wife Sarai and his nephew Lot, and all his wealth and heads to the Land of Canaan, as the Lord instructed him to do so, declaring He would give that land to Abrams’ descendants. Abram and Sarai in Egypt – a severe famine struck the land of Canaan, forcing Abram to go to Egypt to live as a foreigner, but he tells Sarai to tell the Egyptians she is his sister, or they will kill him so they can have her because of her beauty. But the Lord sends terrible plagues upon Pharaoh and his household because of Sarai (who Pharaoh was trying to marry and have relations with), Abram’s wife *but Sarai and Abram were really brothers and sisters, half, as they had the same father but different mothers, not revealed in this chapter, either way they had to leave Egypt
Genesis 13 – Abram and Lot Separate – “so Abram left Egypt and traveled north into the Negev, along with his wife and Lot and all that they owned. 2 (Abram was very rich in livestock, silver, and gold.) 3 From the Negev, they continued traveling by stages toward Bethel, and they pitched their tents between Bethel and Ai, where they had camped before. 4 This was the same place where Abram had built the altar, and there he worshiped the Lord again. 5 Lot, who was traveling with Abram, had also become very wealthy with flocks of sheep and goats, herds of cattle, and many tents. 6 But the land could not support both Abram and Lot with all their flocks and herds living so close together. 7 So disputes broke out between the herdsmen of Abram and Lot. (At that time Canaanites and Perizzites, were also living in the land.) 8 Finally Abram said to Lot, “Let’s not allow this conflict to come between us or our herdsmen. After all, we are close relatives! 9 The whole countryside is open to you. Take your choice of any section of the land you want, and we will separate. If you want the land to the left, then I’ll take the land on the right. If you prefer the land on the right, then I’ll go to the left.” 10 Lot took a long look at the fertile plains of the Jordan Valley in the direction of Zoar. The whole area was well watered everywhere, like the garden of the Lord or the beautiful land of Egypt. (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) 11 Lot chose for himself the whole Jordan Valley to the east of them. He went there with his flocks and servants and parted company with his uncle Abram. 12 So Abram settled in the land of Canaan, and Lot moved his tents to a place near Sodom and settled among the cities of the plain. 13 But the people of this area were extremely wicked and constantly sinned against the Lord. 14 After Lot had gone, the Lord said to Abram, “Look as far as you can see in every direction—north and south, east and west. 15 I am giving all this land, as far as you can see, to you and your descendants[a] as a permanent possession. 16 And I will give you so many descendants that, like the dust of the earth, they cannot be counted! 17 Go and walk through the land in every direction, for I am giving it to you.” 18 So Abram moved his camp to Hebron and settled near the oak grove belonging to Mamre. There he built another altar to the Lord.
Genesis 14 – Abram Rescues Lot – the invaders of Sodom and Gomorrah captured Lot as he was living in Sodom and carried off everything he owned, but one of Lot’s men escaped and told Abram, so he gets his 318 trained me, divided and attacked at night, rescued Lot and brought back him, his possessions as well as women and other captives Melchizedek Blesses Abram - 17 After Abram returned from his victory over Kedorlaomer and all his allies, the king of Sodom went out to meet him in the valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley).18 And Melchizedek, the king of Salem and a priest of God Most High,[d] brought Abram some bread and wine. 19 Melchizedek blessed Abram with this blessing: “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. 20 And blessed be God Most High, who has defeated your enemies for you. ”Then Abram gave Melchizedek a tenth of all the goods he had recovered. 21 The king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give back my people who were captured. But you may keep for yourself all the goods you have recovered.”22 Abram replied to the king of Sodom, “I solemnly swear to the Lord, God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth, 23 that I will not take so much as a single thread or sandal thong from what belongs to you. Otherwise you might say, ‘I am the one who made Abram rich.’ 24 I will accept only what my young warriors have already eaten, and I request that you give a fair share of the goods to my allies—Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre.”
Genesis 15 – Lord’s covenant promise to Abram: God will protect him and his reward would be great and tells him he will have a son of his own. 6 And Abram believed the Lord, and the Lord counted him as righteous because of his faith

Genesis 18 – a son is promised to Sarah and she laughs at God, when she is 90 years old = Abraham intercedes for Sodom, because the sin of homosexuality was so bad and wicked in Sodom, the Lord knew only non righteous lived there and told Abraham he would destroy it but spare if any righteous did live there
Genesis 19 – Sodom and Gomorrah destroyed because of sin of homosexuality but God remembered Abraham’s request in previous chapter and kept Lot safe because he was righteous, however Lot’s wife looked back after instructed not to and she turned to a pillar of salt. Lot escaped to village Zoar known as “little place” Lot’s daughters knew all men had been destroyed and wanted children so they both got their father drunk, had sex with him and got pregnant. Oldest daughter named her son Moab, and youngest daughter named her son Ben-ammi
Genesis 20 – Abraham deceives Abimelech – by telling him that Sarah was his sister not his wife, but God came to Abimelech in a dream and kept him from having sex with Sarah, remember back in chapter 12 they tricked Pharaoh and the Egyptians the same way and terrible plagues came upon Pharaoh and his household. Again Abraham and Sarah were half siblings (same father but different mothers)
Genesis 21 – the birth of Isaac – the Lord kept His word, son born to Abraham at 100 yrs old. In verse 6, God brought Sarah laughter with the birth of her son and all who will hear will laugh with her… then Hagar and Ishmael are sent away (maidservant and Abraham’s first born son) because Ishmael was making fun of Isaac and Sarah saw it happen. Then, Abraham makes a covenant with Abimelech in Beersheba (well of oath) he want deceive again
Genesis 22 – Abraham’s faith is tested, he was asked to sacrifice his son Isaac, knowing God would provide a sheep in place for a burnt offering. Abraham truly feared God and angel came forth to stop him and provided a ram in the bushes for him to use as a sacrifice. This is when “Yahweh Yireh” is introduced, meaning “God will provide”. God then promises to multiply Abraham’s descendants and that they will conquer enemies
Genesis 23 – the burial of Sarah –died in the land of Canaan at 127 yrs old. Abraham bought land, cave area for burial site – 400 pieces of silver
Genesis 24 – a wife for Isaac – Abraham didn’t want him to marry local Canaanite woman so the oldest servant took him to Abraham’s homeland by oath took with him, to find Isaac’s wife outside the city. The servant made this oath by putting his hand under Abraham’s thigh --- servant and Isaac take off and eventually he finds Rebekah (really Abraham’s niece) to marry as she was the one who offered him water and the camels’ water, place to sleep, and Isaac a bed too
Genesis 25 – the death of Abraham – after Sarah’s death later on Abraham married Keturah and had 6 children with her, in addition to Ishmael and Isaac, but Abraham gave everything he had to Isaac and was buried in the cave/land he had purchased for Sarah’s burial spot – then comes Ishmael’s descendants listed --- birth of Esau and Jacob (twin sons’ of Isaac) they wrestled in Rebekah’s stomach, prophesied word that they would be two rival nations ---- Esau sells his birthright to brother Jacob, basically to get to some stew cause he was so angry and his father Isaac asked him to, so there went Esau’s birthrights as first born son
Genesis 26 – Isaac deceives Abimelech they same way as his father did…. By telling him Rebekah was his sister so they couldn’t kill Isaac and take her. --- conflict over water rights with wells of Isaac’s ---- Isaac then makes a covenant with Abimelech, after he kicked Isaac off his land, made a peace covenant and then water was found at the well
Genesis 27 – Jacob steals Esau’s blessing, with the help of his mother …Jacob asked Esau to go out and hunt to cook him some stew… Jacob was getting old and going blind… so Rebekah gets Jacob to get meat for the stew and she fixes it, puts goat skin on Jacob’s smooth part of neck and arms to trick his father, since Esau was neck and arms were hairy and rough. Well the tricked work and Isaac blessed Jacob before Esau could stop it… it was done to late by then, Esau had lost out on his blessing…Jacob then has to flee to Paddan-Aram after his mother Rebekah overhears Esau’s plans to kill his brother after he mourns his father’s death… plus, Rebekah didn’t want Jacob marrying a Hittite woman anyway
Genesis 28 – Jacob dreams of stairway that reached earth to heaven, an angels are going up and down the stairway, at the top of the stairway stood the Lord… and give the ground Jacob was lying on to him and his descendants –and the Lord promised that He would not leave Jacob until He gave him everything He promised…this happened at Bethel, meaning “House of God”
Genesis 29 – Jacob arrives at Paddan-Aram to find a wife, as his father Isaac instructed him to come here and find one. He married Rachel and her sister Leah, because his father in law did him a dirty deed (the words of my earthly daddy). Jacob worked 7 years to marry Rachel, but her father sent Leah in during dark to sleep with Jacob, so Jacob marry Leah, then he had to work another 7 years to marry Rachel. Jacob had many children, it was a regular soap opera for sure, because Leah felt unloved but God allowed her to have children, she thought Jacob would love her like he did Rachel when she gave birth to his first son. The first four sons Leah gave birth to were Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah
Genesis 30 - Rachel could not conceive children so she becomes jealous of Leah, and has Jacob sleep with her servant and she has two sons with Jacob… then Leah didn’t get pregnant after Judah, so she had Jacob sleep with her servant and he had two more sons… then Leah pays Rachel with mandrakes so she can sleep with her husband and has a firth son named Issachar, then comes a sixth son, Zebulun, later Leah gives birth to Jacob’s only daughter, Dinah. God remembers Rachel’s plight and allows her to bear children, so she has a son named Joseph. --- Jacob had 12 sons that would be know as the 12 tribes of Israel… more information about this coming later on…. So, Jacob’s wealth increases when he tricks his wives father, Laban with mating animals a certain way
Genesis 31- Jacob flees from Laban when his sons’ becomes angry that Jacob becomes wealthy at their father’s expense …Jacob dreams about the streaked, speckled and spotted goats that he used to become wealthy and tricked Laban (haha, seeing something like that nowadays would seem like a hallucination or something) then Leah and Rachel head back to Canaan with Jacob not telling their father their plans and Rachel stole her father’s household idols and took them with her, all done in secret of course. ---- Laban pursues Jacob, he catches up with them 7 days later in the country of Gilead, but God warned Laban (in a dream) to leave Jacob alone. Laban was mad that they had left in secret and he couldn’t tell his daughters goodbye, but also about the missing household idols. Laban searched all the tents, Rachel had it hid in the camel saddle, and sit on it and told her father she couldn’t get up because she was on her monthly period. === so, since Laban couldn’t find anything, Jacob goes off on him talking about how he slaved for him for 20 years…. So comes Jacob’s treaty with Laban… they set beside a pile of stones (stones represented a witness) to eat the covenant meal not to harm each other
Genesis 32 – Jacob sends gifts to his twin brother Esau, animals he had gained such as goats, ewes, rams, camels, cows, bulls, and donkeys… Jacob sends these gifts ahead because he heard that Esau is coming with 400 army men and assumes he will attack him and his family. ------ Jacob wrestles with God… fights with a man and when he sees Jacob will beat him he touches Jacob’s hip socket and wrenched it out of place… then calls him Israel, because he wrestled with man and God and won…even the people of Israel don’t eat the tendon near the hip socket because of what happened to Jacob’s hip
Genesis 33 – Jacob and Esau make peace and Esau brought an army of men to protect Jacob’s family not harm them…awe should be proof right here never to make assumptions, Esau was coming to embrace Jacob not erase him
Genesis 34 – revenge against Shechem ---- Dinah the daughter of Jacob and Leah, and his only daughter was raped by Shechem, then he falls in lover with her and wanted to marry him… her brothers ticked him into thinking she would marry him if all men there were circumcised …So as the men were recovering, Simeon and Levi entered the town with swords and killed every man, taking Dinah back with them to camp… Jacob was furious
Genesis 35 – Jacob’s return to Bethel and this is when his name becomes Israel via God, and this chapter is when God says He is “El-Shaddai” God Almighty and He (Jacob) is promised all the land of Abraham and Isaac. ---- then comes the death of Isaac and Rebekah (she dies after giving birth to son called Benjamin by his father) These are the names of the twelve sons of Jacob: 23 The sons of Leah were Reuben (Jacob’s oldest son), Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun. 24 The sons of Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin. 25 The sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s servant, were Dan and Naphtali. 26 The sons of Zilpah, Leah’s servant, were Gad and Asher.
Genesis 36 – the descendants of Esau are listed – Esau married his cousin and another young woman, a lot of crazy names that I can’t spell or pronounce followed, but Esau was known as “Edom”
Genesis 37 – Joseph’s dream about being king and ruler and family bowing down to him, even the sun and stars bowed…. Then Joseph is sold into slavery by his brothers… Reuben was the only one who didn’t want to see this happen and tried to stop it…. Joseph settled in the land of Canaan tending flocks and his father Jacob gave him a beautiful robe (aka Coat of many colors) and Joseph’s brothers became jealous that their father liked him best…. Sold him into slavery to the Ishmaelite tribe for 20 pieces of silver…. Joseph’s brothers killed a young goat, dipped his robe in the blood, sent it to their father Jacob and let him think a wild animal had eaten him, and it left Jacob saying he would go to his grave mourning over his son Joseph. (Jacob’s first born son with Rebekah, whom he loved more than Leah, so a special bond was created)
Genesis 38 – Judah and Tamar:
SIDE NOTE: The first five books of the Bible: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy) form one unified group, which goes by several names. You’ve likely heard them called:
- The Torah, which comes from the Hebrew word for “law”
- The Pentateuch, which comes from a means “five-book work,” or “five-fold book”
- The Books of Moses (also “the Book of Moses,” or simply “Moses”), who’s traditionally credited as the primary source of these books
- The Law of Moses, a blend of the first and third names

Story Summary: Up until this point in the Bible, the whole world had one language - one common speech for all people. The people of the earth became skilled in construction and decided to build a city with a tower that would reach to heaven. By building the tower they wanted to make a name for themselves and also prevent their city from being scattered. God came to see their city and the tower they were building. He perceived their intentions, and in His infinite wisdom, He knew this "stairway to heaven" would only lead the people away from God. He noted the powerful force within their unity of purpose. As a result, God confused their language, causing them to speak different languages so they would not understand each other. By doing this, God thwarted their plans. He also scattered the people of the city all over the face of the earth. * Descendants of Shem to Abram are listed
Genesis 12 – The call of Abram – he takes his wife Sarai and his nephew Lot, and all his wealth and heads to the Land of Canaan, as the Lord instructed him to do so, declaring He would give that land to Abrams’ descendants.
Judah (Leah and Jacob’s son) finds a lady named Tamar for his first son, but the wicked son dies. You know what that means. Oh, you don't?
Well, Judah explains to his second son Onan that he must follow the laws of Levirate marriage, which are elaborated in Deuteronomy 25:5-10. These laws dictate that the brother of a dead husband must marry the widowed wife (his sister-in-law) and produce an heir in order to keep the lineage of the deceased brother alive. Here's the deal. Onan knew any baby Tamar bore would not be his heir, but his brother's, so he refuses to produce a child for his dead brother when he has sex by allowing his semen to go on the ground. Well, that's just not going to fly with God, so he kills Onan.

Judah sends Tamar back to her father's house until Judah's youngest son, Shelah, is old enough for marriage.
After a while, Tamar takes matters into her own hands. She disguises herself as a prostitute and approaches Judah. She asks for three very personal items: signet, cord, and staff. She will hold these as a pledge until Judah pays her with a kid from his flock. That's like the biblical equivalent of a social security card, credit cards, and driver's license. Next thing you know, Tamar conceives a baby. Judah learns that Tamar is pregnant "by harlotry" (38:24 NRSV), and he declares that she must be burned. Tamar makes it known that the father of her baby is none other than… Judah. Oh, and she has his social security card “cord”. No one can deny it.
Tamar births twin boys named Perez and Zerah.

Joseph was put in charge of Potiphar’s house and refused to sleep with his wife, even though she tried to seduce him, Joseph was not going to be unpleasing against God. One day, Potiphar’s wife grabs Joseph’s cloak demanding sex, he was handsome and she lusted, but he pulled away which tore his cloak, she cried to other servants that Joseph tried to rape her, so this led to him being thrown into prison. He wouldn’t let them leave Egypt until they bring him their youngest brother. 10 brothers were in prison for three days, thinking the Lord was punishing them for what they did to Joseph….. so, they return for their brother but their father Jacob refuses to send Benjamin back, he had already lost Joseph…Reuben offers to let his 2 sons be killed, if Benjamin didn’t return safely from Egypt…Jacob gives in and lets them take Benjamin.
Genesis 43 – The brothers return to Egypt with Benjamin… Joseph presents them with a feast at his palace, insures them they aren’t being punished…seated them at the table and they were surprised when he seats them youngest to oldest at a table separate from him, and he gives Benjamin 5x the amount food (only other son of his mother Rachel, so there was a bond)
